11:31 am - What is Urinetown? One of the problems with running a game like Lullaby of Broadway happens when the player base is only familiar with some of the source material.
For example, nearly everybody who plays will have seen Chicago and have heard of RENT, but very few will have even heard of, say, Urinetown or Ragtime.
This means that nobody will be excited about Urinetown, and nobody will want to play characters from Urinetown, and it will be ignored.
This is a shame because Urinetown is one of the best musicals I lucked into seeing in a long time. It has a serious, if wacky premise, plenty of dark humor, and a heaping helping of meta humor, breaking the 4th wall as if it didn't exist.
It is a great show, but because nobody has heard of it, nobody will care. Sad.
Here is a clip of Urinetown from the Tony Awards. I strongly urge you to seek out Urinetown and listen to the soundtrack or watch more video clips. You will thank me. You really will.
The song itself is from the start of the second act, but the introduction is worth it. Officer Lockstock is one of my favorite characters ever...

It's an excellent show! We have a postcard from it on our wall: "Did I send you to The Most Expensive University. in the World to teach you how to feel conflicted or to. learn how to manipulate great masses of people?"
When we were in NYC to see Hairspray, we got tickets to it at the half-price ticket booth. We wanted to see it because it seemed like it was such a New York-centric show that people elsewhere wouldn't understand it, and it would never travel, but there actually was a touring company.
I agree with pretty much everything you mentioned. Plus, it's arguably science fiction, which is pretty rare on Broadway!
And politically moving!
Man, everytime I see a new update I keep thinking - moving out east would be a good idea.

I highly disagree.
It;s universal.
Were in a bit of a draught where I am, with Water Board controversies and it played *real well* here.

Seen Urinetown twice. I wanna play Lockstock, but know I'd be cast as Cladwell.
The synopsis on the Wikipedia page ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urinetown) was a mess. I fixed as much as I could, but I've never seen the show. Someone who has should probably fact check at least the synopsis part.

tbo, knowing your preference for musicals and stories, I don't think you'd like Urinetown. While the "bad guys" get what's coming to them, the "good guys" don't achieve a solid victory.

man, did the production of urinetown i saw just suck? if left me feeling the same amount of bored and unsatisfied that reefer madness did. i'm told urinetown was doing some parody of some shows i don't know (and some I did know), and maybe recognizing more of the parody would have helped...

I adore Urinetown- I got to do it two summers ago and it was one of the best productions I have ever experianced.
there is a lot of "theater" jokes (choreagraphy styles, song-styles, etc) but the basic characters are wonderful and the music's so happy!
I've always liked the song "Don't Be the Bunny"...
Just one quote:
"Or a bad title! A bad title could RUIN a show!"
Self-parody wins my heart every time.

I liked the sound of it from the summary on the Lullaby site far better than some of the less bleak shows. I enjoyed listening to the music for it on the way down to Intercon MidAtlantic. However, I still have doubts about how well it fits with all of the other shows for Lullaby 2, doubts that I know mnemex and zrealm share, even though we all like what we know of the show, and zrealm was fortunate enough to have seen it. There is such a wide range of material for Lullaby 2 that I'm honestly not sure which of several possible roads it will take. |
