I have to say that I have never written a LARP quite like The Road Not Taken. I mean I've written experimental LARPs before, but this one is unique.
It isn't just that it's in the ten bad larps format, so it's really 12 mini larps, meaning that I need to write up nearly 150 pages of information.
It's the whole structure of the larp, if it is even a larp. It is live action, and there is role playing, but I don't think the interactions will be like anything else I've seen in a LARP before. I was striving for a Scandanavian style larp where the focus was on really getting into the character's mindset, and I wanted to merge LARP with psychodrama, and I think I've succeeded with both goals. But.... wow.
And I'm certain of this: more than any other LARP I've written, even Lullaby of Broadway, the success or failure of The Road Not Taken will depend entirely on the players understanding what I'm trying to do, and working together to get there. If they get into it, understand the mindset I'm going for, and push it, it will be a great game, but if I can't explain what I'm looking for, or the players don't want to go there, it won't even last for two or three of the scenarios. Luckily, I've got a very good group of players who are willing to push the boundaries of LARP.
Still, as is my wont, I'm quite nervous about it. I like taking chances, and usually I succeed, but this one really could go either way. I'll report back next week, after the event. If it goes well, The Road Not Taken will be my November download. If not, it'll be Holiday Season which does nothing to break the boundaries of LARP and -- at worst -- will be accepted as another standard table/negotiations game.

I'm psyched!
I've just been reading about the latest in LARP'ing, and came across the Road Not Taken, which sounds very intriguing. I would definitely like to read it. I would have liked to play it this weekend as well, but I have a term paper to write and my wife has a bridal shower to attend. |
